Course content:  This course is designed to give the student practical skills and deepen their knowledge of agricultural and economic issues.  Students will acquire an understanding of the economic and social impact of the agriculture industry upon society.  Upon successful completion of this course students will be prepared for post-secondary education in agriculture and economics as well as entry-level positions in a wide range of occupations.  Topics include: financial analysis, record keeping, economics, business management functions, agriculture credit system, interest rates, taxes, commodity marketing, international agriculture, applications of technology, career development, effective communication, current events in agriculture, resume creation, job interview techniques, etiquette, FFA leadership and supervised occupational experience programs.  THIS COURSE MEETS THE ECONOMICS GRADUATION REQUIREMENT.

ANIMAL  SCIENCE  (ROP Ag.  Production)

Prerequisite:                                          Completion of Introduction to 
                                                            Vocational  Agriculture.

Course content:  The purpose of this course is to provide the student with in-depth study of the following:  Careers in Animal Science, FFA, Animal Classifications (Invertebrates and Vertebrates), Comparative Biological Structures and Functions, and Animal Husbandry.   This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills required for entry into those agricultural production occupations that do not require education beyond the secondary school level.  Students will require an understanding of the economic and social impact of agriculture in general.

Course Requirement:                         Grades 9-10        

Length:                                             Two-year class
 
Course content:  This course prepares students for successful careers as well as prepares them for advanced training leading to an agriculture career requiring education at the post-secondary level.  The following topics will be covered: state, national and global agriculture, animal, plant and soil science, agriculture business management, surveying, leadership, employability and career development.  Students will learn basic principles of the plant and animal food chain.  They will also gain an understanding of the FFA organization, and have the opportunity to participate in leadership activities such as public speaking, parliamentary procedure and judging.  Participation in FFA activities is an integral part of this course.  When these courses are taken in conjunction with Animal Science or Plant and Soil Science they meet the  Orland High School Science graduation requirement.

ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE
 
Course Requirement:                               Grades 10-12

Course content:  Ornamental Horticulture (OH) will focus on the principles and concepts of plant science that are applicable to the production, processing and use of plant products.  Emphasis will include four major areas: 1) Scientific Studies: plant taxonomy, parts, and function; environmental requirements; growth factors; propagation methods and practices; 2) Facilities and Equipment: containers; irrigation systems; structures; climate controls; 3) Environmental Management Issues:  pest controls; plant identification, selection, and purpose; container vs. in-ground and 4) Design Elements: landscape and hardscape; lawn and turf grass; vegetable and flower gardens; basic decorative processes.  Plant materials will include houseplants, vines, ground covers, annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees adapted to the climates of the California central valleys.  Emphasis on reading, writing, computations, and multi-media presentations connected to ornamental horticulture topics.

Course content:  This course is designed to teach students to use most types of welding equipment, safety practices involved in welding, and beginning principles in metal fabrication.  Students will use both arc and acetylene equipment.

Prerequisite:                          Completion of Welding I, Basic.

Course content:  This course is designed to give the student advanced techniques in welding, and handling mig and tig welders.  Students will build their own individual projects.
