|
| | BIOLOGY** Course Requirement: Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: "C" or in previous science class
Length: Year class Course content: Biology is the study of living things. Topics covered include the scientific method, cells, DNA, genetics, and the structure and function of plants and animals. Lectures, demonstrations, labs and group presentations are used to emphasize scientific concepts.
|
| | CHEMISTRY** Course Requirement: Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: "B" or better in both Algebra I & Biology.
Length: Year class Course content: This course is designed for the college preparatory student as an overview of theories and principles in inorganic chemistry. Topics covered include measurement, atomic structure, matter and energy, chemical and physical changes, chemical composition, and chemical reactions. Laboratory experiments and demonstrations are used to stress scientific procedure and help bring across important concepts.
|
| | LIFE SCIENCE Course Requirement: Grades 9-12
Length: Year class Course content: The course is designed as an introduction to the study of living organisms. Satisfies the high school graduation requirement for life science. Does not meet the California State University or the University of California lab science requirement. Students planning to take Biology should not take this class.
|
| | PHYSICAL SCIENCE Prerequisite: Grades 9-11
Length: Year class
Course content: This course is designed as an introductory science course. Topics covered include matter, chemistry, levers, pulleys, light, sound, gravity, motion, electricity, magnetism, earth science, weather, and ecology. Demonstrations, lectures, and laboratory activities will cover general concepts in the physical sciences. Satisfies the graduation requirement for Physical Science but does not meet the California State University or the University of California's lab requirement.
|
| | PHYSICS** Course Requirement: Grade 11-12
Prerequisite: "C" grade or better in Geometry or approval of the instructor.
Length: Year class-every other year Course content: The course deals with applications of mathematics and science principles in solving problems and understanding physical concepts. Topics covered include measurements, force and motion, atomic structure, heat, wave motion and sound, light, and electricity. Laboratory experiments and demonstrations are used to emphasize the “scientific method” and to show the importance and validity of the physical laws.
|
| | ZOOLOGY and BOTANY** Course Requirement: 10-12
Prerequisite: “B” or better in Biology or instructor permission.
Length: Year Class every other year. Course content: This course focuses on the study of both plants and animals. Botany involves learning about the structures of plants, whereas Zoology concentrates on the many animal groups. Lectures, labs, group presentations, andfield trips are used toemphasize the scientific concepts. **Meets the graduation requirement and satisfies the California State University and the University of California Lab Science requirement.
