ENGLISH I
 
Course Requirement:                Grade 9

This course focuses on communication skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, with an additional emphasis on study skills such as time management, note taking, and test taking strategies. Writing instruction will include the Six Traits of effective writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions). Representative examples of poetry, short stories, novels, and plays will be explored following guidelines in the California Literature Framework. Vocabulary study will accompany the literature, with additional work on common Greek and Latin roots. A unit on career exploration will be included, culminating in a short research paper following MLA guidelines. Students will also begin a graduation portfolio. A student who receives a grade of “C” or better will earn credit toward CSU and UC admission.

ENGLISH   II
 
Course Requirement:                Grades 10-11

Prerequisite:                             Completion of English I.

Course content:  English II includes review work in grammar, usage, punctuation, oral skills, spelling, and vocabulary.  It stresses writing competency through work in sentence structure and multi-paragraph papers and emphasizes the skills needed to pass the Basic Skills Proficiency Tests.  Various types of literature are included, such as the short story, the novelette, and drama.  A student, who receives a grade of "C" or better, will receive credit toward CSU, and U.C. Admission.

ENGLISH   III
 
Course Requirement:                 Grade 11

Prerequisite:                             Completion of English I and II.

Course content:  English III concentrates on American Literature.  A portion of the reading assignments will
correlate with the U.S. History curriculum.  Students will also review grammar skills, writing mechanics, and punctuation.  Emphasis will be placed on essay writing, spelling, vocabulary, and speaking and listening skills.  Students will read novels, plays, short stories, and poetry by American authors.

ENGLISH  IV

Prerequisite:                            Completion of English I, II, and III.

This class will review components of literature and writing, as well as provide instruction in research and presentation skills for the Senior Project.  In literature, the focus is on British authors and the history of the English language. Literary works of reader interest as well as those recommended in the California Literature Framework will be read and analyzed. Students will study Greek and Latin word parts in preparation for college admission tests. They will also write application essays, response to literature, and the Senior Project research paper. There will be emphasis one the continued development of the ability to think and to express oneself.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) ENGLISH:  LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION

Prerequisite:                Completion of English I and II

Course content:  English III/AP will concentrate on intensive work to prepare the college bound student for the rigors of a college English curriculum.  This class will focus primarily on language and composition.  Students will learn the primary modes of expository writing and will read, discuss and interpret American literature (although some European and Pacific Rim literature will be presented) in preparation for taking the AP Composition Exam.  There shall be periodic practice on AP multiple choice and composition exams, and a thorough analysis of writing modalities.  It is a difficult, but rewarding, English course.  Currently, a student who scores three (or higher) on the AP exam will receive college credit towards first year English in most colleges and/or universities.

Course content:  English IV/AP will concentrate on intensive work to prepare the college bound student for the rigors of a college English curriculum.  This class will focus entirely on literature and writing.  Students will read, discuss, interpret and analyze English poetry and prose in preparation for taking the AP Literature Exam.  There will be periodic practice on AP composition and multiple-choice exams, in-depth study of library terms, and a rigorous writing component of literary analysis.  It is a difficult but rewarding course.  A student who scores a three or higher on the AP exam will receive college credit for first year English in most universities.

Course Requirement:                9-12

Prerequisite:                            Approval of instructor and counselor.

Course content:  students of all nationalities who are perfecting their English skills take this course.  This course fulfills the English requirements for graduation up to a maximum of thirty units.  Students will be concurrently enrolled in ELD and English classes during their senior year.
