| | ELAC Minutes November 6, 2008 C.K.PriceMiddle School 6:30 p.m. at Mill Street Library 1. Approved Minutes of September 4, 2008 2. Importance of ELAC and Members ELAC at school site: Mr. Ryan explained that any school that has 21 or more ELL students is required by law to have an ELAC committee. The committee’s responsibilities are to give input and ask questions on various school and ELL issues. Responsibility of an ELAC member: They must attend all meetings (only three more this year) and actively participate (ask questions or give feedback) at meetings. They serve for two years. Responsibility of DELAC members: Must attend all DELAC meetings and report DELAC info at ELAC meetings if necessary. He/she serves for two years. 3. Selection Process of ELAC members: Election of Staff members Jody Madrigal, Zandi Lawrence and Connie Livingston were selected based on their role as Language! teachers to the students that parents’ are involved in ELAC. They self-nominated and were voted by ballot at a staff meeting after discussing the purpose of the ELAC. Mr. Ryan thanked and said how kind the staff members were to be part of this committee. Parents agreed. Election of parent members: ELAC: Domitila Melgarejo 865-7450 mother of Emmil Melgarejo Francisca Morales 865-2649 mother of Estevan Morales M. Elena Galvan 865-5441 mother of Jhoana Galvan DELAC: Domitila Melgarejo 865-7450 mother of Emmil Melgarejo Mr. Ryan thanked these parents for volunteering and offered to take them all to dinner the final ELAC meeting this year. Future ELAC Meetings: Mr. Ryan asked what time works best for parents and they liked this time (6:30pm), and they also appreciate the phone call as a reminder. Parents requested that they get the personal phone call instead of the recording. Mr. Ryan said that it took 3 people a total of 11 hours to do that, but we would continue to do it this way. Next meeting will be December 4 at 6:30 at Mill Street Library. The meetings for the rest of the year are March 5th and May 7th. Topics for Future Meetings: We will go over the surveys from last year about what ELAC members are interested in learning about. Parent asked for more ways that parents can help at home. They would like a meeting and/ or material sent home about it. Mrs. Lawrence said she had homework tips that she could have translated and sent home. 4. Current LEA plan Goal 2: Mr. Ryan told parents the school plan was included in their agenda packet. It is the Language! Program. There are a lot of acronyms and it can be difficult to read. There are target students who need additional language acquisition and skills to be successful at grade level material. Staff ELAC members introduced what they taught: Mrs. Livingston teaches 1st-3rd period with students with limited speaking, writing and reading English skills. Most of these students have come very recently from Mexico and are learning the English language. She also teaches 2 more classes with students that have more English skills but gives them additional help and instruction to increase their skills so they can be proficient. She will be starting a new class at semester to help more students in this situation with writing. Mrs. Madrigal teachers 1st and 2nd period 6th grade students that need additional reading, writing and speaking English skills. They are struggling with grade level materials due to gaps in their knowledge of English skills. We start from the basics and build on those. We will continue to increase services. Our goal is to continue to raise API scores in English. We raised them 46 points in the EL population last year and only 30 overall at the school. The EL population worked very hard and we are proud of them. Mr. Ryan thanked the parents for working with them at home and the parents thanked the teachers for working so hard with them.
5. Students Leaving for Holidays: Mr. Ryan reminded parents that extended trips (3-4 weeks out of school) is not very good for students academically. More than 2 weeks (10 days) out of school results in a mandatory drop from the school’s enrollment. He asked for ideas from parents about ways to help with scheduling so that this doesn’t occur. Anything we could do to help it? A parent responded, “For that reason, we don’t go to Mexico.” No one had any suggestions, so Mr. Ryan asked them to call the school if they thought of something. A parent asked about emergencies or deaths, and Mr. Ryan replied that you have to take care of your family and of course you should go if there were an emergency. Parents suggested leaving two days before a vacation to extend it, but return before school starts again. If you have suggestions, call one of the bilingual aides at CK Price- Ms. Lapizco, Mrs. Posvancz, Mrs. Avalos, or Mrs. Zaragoza in the office. Also, if you know that your student is going to miss days before or after a vacation, ask the teacher for work ahead of time so they can have it ready for your child. 6. Promotion/Retention- First Round Complete: We have finished the first set of requirements for promoting and retaining students to a new grade level. Students wrote essays or stories for their first Direct Writing Assessment. They have taken their first round of math assessments as well. 7. Extended Learning Time: There is a Title 1 math intervention class taught daily. There is also a math intervention class for students enrolled in ASAP. You can pick up applications in the office. Mrs. Madrigal teaches 6th grade intervention Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30. All students are welcome. 7th and 8th grade interventions will start soon. 8. Request for parent/teacher conference: if you would like a parent/teacher conference, call Ann McMahon (school counselor) or Jessie Lapizco to set up an appointment. Their phone numbers are listed on the agenda. 865-1225 ext 103 (McMahon) and 142 (Lapizco). 9. Corrective Action Options: The school is in Program Improvement (PI). If the school doesn’t achieve a certain level of improvement, it is in PI due to No Child Left Behind. We are going through the process to make a corrective plan. We ask ourselves, “Where do we need to intervene?” We are in the 3rd year of it. We will go over the surveys next meeting. 2 ways we are going to do it are: Build up curriculum and Reorganization of the school (scheduling, minutes in subject areas). 10.School Site Plan: we did not discuss the school site plan this meeting. 11. School Needs Assessment: Mr. Ryan presented the survey from last year of what the parents wanted more information on. The top five reasons are: How to have a successful parent/teacher conference, how to be an active part of the HW process, summer activities to help your child remain at grade level, how to increase your participation in your children’s education, and how to communicate positively with your child; guidance and discipline. Mr. Ryan asked for additional suggestions from parents that they would like to see. A parent suggested more sports for students. She would like to see more types of sports and times for students to play them. It helps them stay active in school and keeps them out of trouble after school. A parent also asked to see more ways they can help their child at home. 12. Parent Input: Mr. Ryan asked if anyone had any questions or anything to add. No one did. 13. Homework Guides: Mr. Ryan passed out parent homework guides in Spanish for parents that haven’t received one yet. 14. Concerns or Questions? No other concerns or questions. 15. California Mini Corp Mauricio Jaime spoke to parents about the services he provides at C.K. Price. He works with students that are failing or below grade level. He works with students during the school day and at ASAP after school. Parents asked him how long it takes to be a part of the program since they turned in information, but haven’t been added to the program yet. He is a tutor for the CA Mini Corp Program. The next ELAC meeting will be December 4, 2008 at MillStreetSchool at 6:30 p.m. Child Care will be provided. | |
