Born and raised in the Capay District (ten miles northeast of Orland), I attended McIntosh Grammar School kindergarten through eighth grade and graduated from Hamilton Union High School in 1956.
After serving three years in the U.S. Navy, I married Nancy Larkin in Denver, Colorado in January of 1959. We have three grown children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
|
| | In 1965, I started Ben’s Iron Works, and I have been self-employed ever since. For the past 40 years, we have been manufacturing equipment for agriculture and industry, including designing and installing drying and storage facilities for rice and nuts. I am sill active in the business, sharing responsibilities with my son, Jerry. | |

It is my privilege to serve on the OUSD board of education. I have been an active member of our community for over 20 years. I am the parent of three children, and as of 2007 all three are attending schools in our district. The reason I chose to serve is that I believe that our kids need to have the best education possible. My commitment is to make sure that every decision I make puts our kids' education and safety first.

| | After graduating from Orland High School in 1977, I served three years in the US Army, I was stationed overseas in West Germany for most of my enlistment. I came back to the area and attended CSU, Chico until I graduated in 1985. After working in Sacramento for a few years, I returned to be part of our family-owned business. The outlook for the city of Orland is bright. I want to help make decisions for the school district that will provide a vision for the future that enhances the quality of education , so that the children of our community can pursue their dreams and goals after graduation. | |

I am a lifelong resident of Glenn County. I attended Hamilton City schools through the twelfth grade. I attended Stanford University and California State University, Chico. My wife and three children are all successful graduates of the Orland School System. In 1965, I moved to Orland and became owner of F.D. Sweet and Son Mortuary. I operated the business until my retirement in 2000.

| | I have been honored to serve on the Orland Board of Education since 1972. Orland is fortunate to have a very professional, competent and hard-working staff, and I am dedicated to supporting their efforts. | |

It is an honor and a privilege to represent the people of the Orland Unified School District as a Governing Board Member. I have lived in Glenn County all my life and my wife and I have raised four children, all of whom graduated from Orland High School. I have worked with children and adults for over thirty years and find no greater gift than education.
Orland is a wonderful place to live and I am humbled to be able to give back to the people and community who have given me so much.

I am in my third term on the board. I have found it to be an enriching and sometimes challenging position, and I have enjoyed it. I come from a big family. My grandparents all came from Mexico and settled in northern California. My dad, brother, seven sisters and I all graduated from OHS. My mom grew up in the south county and graduated from Princeton High.
|
| | I am single and the only children I have in the district are my nieces, nephews and cousins.
I always liked school and received my degree in Social Sciences from CSU, Chico. I also took someone’s advice and completed student teaching at Hamilton High and received a credential for Social Sciences. My past activities have included being a teacher’s aide, a Little League coach and umpire, a social worker, a claims adjuster and a travel counselor. I also have participated in many sports and am a die hard 49er fan. I currently work for an insurance company. Other interests I have are history, politics and playing Scrabble. It is an honor to work with the district staff and represent the Orland community.
